Note to Towson head coach Tony Seaman, there are two halves in lacrosse. Please pass this message onto your team. They really need to hear it after falling to Maryland 12-7.
The first half was played fairly evenly between the two teams. Neither team was playing particularly well. Maryland had a two clears that resulted in them throwing the ball out of bounds. Maryland had a couple early goals from Jeremy Sieverts and Dan Groot, but then went on a nine minute stretch where they were unable to do much on offense. In particular, Travis Reed missed the net a few times early in the game. There were a lot of of loose balls which led to quite a bit of wild hacking by both sides. Towson held a slight advantage in ground balls after the first half, but were lousy on face offs. The only real offensive highlight was a diving goal by Towson's Eric Boyle.
Both teams also missed out on some great scoring opportunities throughout the game.
This was due to some quality goalkeeping at each end. Towson goalie, Billy Sadtler made some big saves to keep the game close. Despite this, he was replaced at halftime by Matt Antol.
Towson looked like they were going to give Maryland a fight down to the wire. Maryland held onto a one goal lead at the break. However, after halftime, Towson was unable to keep up with the Terps.
After the half, the rain began to pick up for a few minutes, which caused a few of the players to fall.
It looked like the second half would be just as competitive as the first after Maryland and Towson exchanged early goals. However, Maryland scored three straight goals. Towson scored two goals within 15 seconds in the last minute of the third quarter. This was the only offensive spark that was seen from Towson in the second half.
Maryland completely shut Towson down in the fourth quarter. Towson was able to muster only three shots and did not win a single face off. Maryland was led by Grant Catalino who stepped up his physical play in the fourth quarter. He broke through several defenders to start the scoring midway in through the fourth. The team also received a huge momentum swing after long pole Brian Farrell scored. He was then mobbed by his teammates on the sideline. Maryland was able to hold onto the ball for most of the quarter which was key fending off Towson.
Three key players today were Will Dalton who won 7 of 10 face offs and had a goal. Dan Groot led the offense with three goals, giving him six on the season. Ryne Aldolph picked up six ground balls.
Maryland will look to extend their winning streak to three straight when they face UMBC on the road at 7:30 on Friday.
